I came across this YouTube video of Marc Montgomery signing off after RCI’s 67-year-old tradition of shortwave broadcasts came to an end on June 22, 2012. The program has been killed after the CBC’s budget was cut by $115-million over three years.
While the purpose of this blog is to look at where journalism is heading, Montgomery’s tearful farewell reminds us of the importance of remembering where we have come from, and what our role is for our listeners/readers/audience. It’s worth the six minutes to watch this.
Posted on Youtube with this farewell was this explainer: Radio Canada International journalist Marc Montgomery broke down in tears during his farewell speech to listeners as RCI ended its 67-year history of shortwave broadcasts yesterday. June 22, 2012, was the last day of The Link, RCI’s flagship English language daily radio show, which Marc hosted from its very inception in October 2006.
